Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
