Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
