The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
